Provarma is a small village near to the larger settlement of Stilos, with much of the old winding village pathways still visible. The local people tend their flowers and vegetables with care and are fiercely proud of their local wines, honey and tsikoudia. The area is still reliant on agriculture and rearing
livestock. In mythology, Zeus traveled to Stilos to drink the pure waters from the springs. The well known "Samaria" brand of bottled water is still produced from the springs in the village. Fresh local produce is always available in the village shop, kafeneions and tavernas and sitting under the vast plane trees next to the springs is one of the great joys of this area, as is the excellent fresh organic produce used to create the most mouth watering traditional Cretan dishes.
