The tiny village of Aiguines has no less than 4 restaurants, a small grocers, bakery, a honey shop and the delightful ‘Autour de la Table’ selling local and home made produce and a selection of hand picked wines! Overlooking the village is the glorious 17th century Chateau, with it’s decorative roof tiles and Romanesque bell tower.
About the Area.
The house is set in a remarkable area, the National Parc du Verdon. The Gorge, only a few kilometres away is known as the mini Grand Canyon, and two roads weave dizzyingly to the North and South of it, clinging to the cliff edges . The southern road, known as the Corniche Sublime, starts it’s climb from the village of Aiguines itself, so it really is on your doorstep! The Lac St. Croix, with miles of excellent swimming or sailing is a short drive down the mountain side. Pedalos and canoes can be hired for venturing up the amazing blue waters of the Gorge du Verdon. For more challenging activities, such as paragliding and rock climbing, information can be found in the local tourism office in Aiguines.
15 Kilometres away, over the Galatas bridge, is the medieval village of Moustier Ste Marie, known for its Fayence pottery, and its dramatic setting in the rocks of the Gorge.
20km or so away is the bustling market village of Aups, where you will find all your shopping needs. Wednesday and Saturday are market days, full of local produce and colourful stalls, and there is a supermarket on the outskirts of the village.
Nearer still, down by the lake is the village of Les Salles-sur-Verdon, which has a butchers and many other shops and it’s own lively market day on Thursdays.
The sea and beaches of St Tropez, or St Maxime are between 1 and a half to 2 hours drive away, (depending on the seasonal traffic down by the coast!), and easily manageable for a day trip.
But despite the numerous activities, and places to see, you will find it difficult to leave the poolside of your own villa!
