From May to October you can usually count on real summer weather, some 2018 days rising to over 40° C with very warm nights. As the climate changes deep snow around the house is becoming rarer, thanks to this microclimate where the mountains block the movement of cold air, but the white stuff can be found in good quantity just up the road at Gerardmer and Xonrupt where there are many ski slopes, sometimes created by snow cannons for your pleasure. So between November and April, skiing, without the huge traffic jams found in the Alps, where the air is far more polluted than here in The Vosges, is a regular thing.
Around this area there are plenty of places where you may fill your larder with almost every single thing you desire, from milk, warm and fresh from the farm, (we get ours there), vegetables in the markets that are in almost all the local villages one day or another - Corcieux, 1 1/2 miles away is on Mondays, Fraize, 12 kms distant is on Fridays and a bigger affair altogether, or direct from the producers of cheeses, including goats, bread from our well recommended boulangerie; where he even offers gluten free bread with his fantastic chocolates, or from the President cheese factory in Corcieux where all their range is on offer at below shop prices.
And of course, there is the French version of our Car Boot Sales - Les Marchés au Puces. You have to go each Sunday to wherever is the next one - they are not in the same place as each village vies to be bigger and better than the others, ours in La Houssière being one of the biggest and best in the area on the second weekend of August; Nathalie has a stand there for her Cat Charity every year.
As this part of France, almost a hidden treasure, is often missed by those driving South for sun or ski, its great attraction is the get away from it all potential but with usually no more than an hours drive from some wonderful places. Albert Sweitzer's, birthplace, Keysersberg, is 3/4 of an hour away, and last year was voted the best village attraction in France. And then you can visit the castles in the air, such as Keysersberg or Bruyeres close by and many more often for the fit and keen as they were built on high peaks some accessible after a good climb.
We offer weekend breaks with a minimum of 2 nights or up to 2 weeks, priced per person. Prices for 2 people starting at £150 for the weekend. Please enquire for dates and availability.
This area of The Vosges has around 40 ski slopes in winter, vast forests to roam, and is set between the autoroutes to the South. Access to Alsace and the fabulous wines to be found there is less than an hour away as are amusement parks for the younger ones, a really great animal park rather than a zoo, where there is a good day out. Chez nous, there is rarely anything to disturb the peace other than farmers at work. Nathalie and John delight in making your stay as good as it can be, helping you to find places to go and things to do to suit your tastes. As naturopaths, with a very successful business in natural products and a deep belief in preserving what is natural and good in life, Nathalie also having her well supported animals rescue charity, our belief is in endeavouring to cater for all tastes of those who wish to get away from the rat race. We understand that a British birds web site covering this area is one of the most frequented. Of course, patience is rewarded in sighting the wildlife, but motion detecting cameras can be placed close to your lodging for very rewarding pictures. Beavers are at work in the small river a few hundred yards from the house. We often have visiting peacocks and peahens in our hen/duck/goose run who are totally unafraid of humans; with the necessary permits fishing is abundant in the rivers and lakes hereabouts. The forest tracks are a delight for off road cycling with miles - or kilometres - of marked routes. These are also great for walkers, bearing in mind that they are unpaved for the greater part.
For those wishing to see some beautiful places and history, the towns of Colmar, Strasbourg, in Alsace or Gerardmer, a spa town as well as ski centre, which is just up the road; all are close by us. In summer there are natural lakes for picnics and swimming, at your own risk and our own spa in the garden is yours to use equally at your own risk for adults or children under adult supervision, as available. Our patio, facing open country, with free use of the barbecue is yours to enjoy to while away the evenings in the ever increasing summer warmth.
I am a lover of animals and nature. I have a cat rescue Charity, Chat'Ouille Cats Rescue for the sterilisation of feral cats. I practice the use of natural products wherever possible in and around the house.
I have two appartements to sleep 4 or 5 people on a quiet location in the Vosges Mountains. I welcome anyone who is of a like mind.
